Nothing Can Separate Us

There is a day coming and almost is here
When evil will come like a flood
When people will hate us on account of you
It may even cost us our blood
When truth evokes anger and righteousness hate
And conscience is seared deep within
They’ll treat us as outcasts and laugh in our face
As the world staggers drunk in her sin.

When the darkness surrounds us and we tremble with fear
And lawlessness governs the land
You’ll show us your face and pour out your grace
And give us the strength to stand

Tell me who can separate us from your love
Who can divide us from the Father above
Shall tribulation or distress
Shall persecution or nakedness
Shall hunger or danger or peril or sword
Keep us from the love of our Lord?

You made a promise in all of these things
That we would overcome
We have been made more than conquerors
Through the blood of your son
Through terrors by night and arrows by day
Though ten thousand fall at our side
You are our refuge and dwelling place
And within your shelter we’ll hide

Though the darkness surrounds us and we tremble with fear
And lawlessness governs the land
You’ll show us you face and pour out your grace
And give us the strength to stand

Tell me who can separate us from your love?
Who can divide us from the Father above?
Not tribulation or distress
Not persecution or nakedness
Not hunger or danger or peril or sword
Can keep us from the love of our Lord.

NOTHING CAN SEPARATE US
I remember standing in line to vote in the 1992 presidential elections, the recently forming words of a new song flowing through my thoughts, “There is a day coming and almost is here, when evil will come like a flood…”  Something told me there was something significant on the horizon, that all of humanity was hurtling toward tumultuous times, and that followers of Jesus in our lifetime (and yes, in America) would need to know what God’s Word said about such times and to hold fast to it in the face of great difficulty.  Thus, “Nothing Can Separate Us” was born, speaking of God’s unconquerable love from which we will not be separated, in even the direst of circumstances.

Fast forward twenty some years and the persecution of Jesus followers has ramped up to unprecedented levels worldwide, with evil rising, sweeping in like a flood in certain regions of the world, still rising in others.  But, “…When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him.”  Isaiah 59:19. The Light of the World cannot be overcome by darkness, His love endures forever, and in all things He will cause His children to be more than conquerors, instead, overcomers in all things.  His powerful, faithful love will be our shelter, and His strength will cause us to stand in weakness.  His banner (standard) over us is love and we shall remain bound to it through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
